Why our trade is different

Every trade that works off a ladder shares the same risks: a bad base, an overreach, a rung that gives. Electricians carry one more, and it is the one that turns a fall into an electrocution. The ladder is a conductor, you are holding it, and the thing you are working near is live until proven otherwise.

That is why the material question is not a matter of taste. Aluminium is lighter, cheaper and perfectly good for a joiner. For us it is the wrong tool anywhere near a supply, and on most commercial sites it is simply not permitted.

Fibreglass is the standard, and why

Glass-reinforced plastic does not conduct. That is the entire argument and it does not need any others. It costs more and weighs twenty to thirty per cent more for the same length, and both of those are worth paying.

The comparison is set out properly in this guide to fibreglass and aluminium ladders, which is written for the trade rather than for retail and is honest about where aluminium is still the sensible choice. The short version for our purposes: if the job goes near a supply, the answer is fibreglass and there is no trade-off to weigh.

One caveat that catches people out. Fibreglass is only non-conductive while it is intact and clean. A deep score through the resin, a metal repair plate, or a stile caked in wet mud and swarf is no longer reliably insulating. The material buys protection; it does not excuse skipping the check.

The pre-use check, thirty seconds

Feet present and gripping. Stiles free of cracks, dents and deep scores. Rungs firm and clean. Locking mechanisms positive. On fibreglass, look for chalking - a dull white powder that comes off on your hand - because that means UV has been breaking down the resin and the fibres underneath are next.

A ladder that fails any of those is scrap, not a repair job. Tag it or destroy it so nobody else climbs it.

Set-up, which is where it actually goes wrong

One in four. Base secured. Firm level ground. Three points of contact, belt buckle between the stiles, and get down and move it rather than reaching. Every regulator says substantially the same thing about all of this, wherever you are working.

The rule that gets broken most is the last one. Moving a ladder eight times across a ceiling run is tedious, and tedium is what the statistics are made of.

When a ladder is the wrong call

Anything sustained. If the task will hold you in one position for more than about half an hour, or needs both hands and real force, a podium step or a tower is the defensible choice and the faster one once you count the repositioning.

That judgement is yours to make and to be able to explain. Nobody has ever been criticised for having brought the tower.
