Panel Upgrades: What Actually Changes
Most upgrades are sold as capacity. The real gains are usually protection and diagnosis.
Capacity is rarely the constraint
Households convinced they need more amps usually need more circuits. The main service is frequently adequate and the problem is a board with no spare ways and four things sharing a radial that was never meant to carry them.
Do the load calculation before quoting the service upgrade. It is a short conversation that occasionally saves the customer several thousand.
What a modern board buys
Individual protection per circuit, so a fault in the kitchen does not darken the house. Residual current protection where it is required. Surge protection, which is cheap at installation and expensive to retrofit. And labelling, which sounds trivial until somebody has to find a circuit at two in the morning.
The bits that overrun
Meter tails and the position of the cut-out. Asbestos in older boards and backing panels. Bonding that was never brought up to standard and has to be corrected as part of the work. Price all three at survey or absorb them later.
